Onshape has made professional 3D CAD available to thousands of people who could have never accessed or afforded CAD before – and these people come from all levels of experience. Some users are completely new to CAD and are interested in learning about it, but don’t know where to start, while others are experts.
Although Onshape is easily accessible, affordable, and simple to get started (sign up here), we realize that trying to learn CAD from scratch can be difficult. For those who are just beginning, we have created the Onshape Learning Center: An Introduction to CAD.
What can you expect to learn in the first course?
- Introduction: An overview of CAD vocabulary, the Onshape interface, and sketching basics
- Basic Features: How to create 3D models using each basic feature
- Part Design: How to develop a strategy for using multiple features to create a part
- Assemblies: Assembling parts together to view mechanical motion
- Collaboration: Working effectively with others within a single Document

Each of the five lessons is broken down into a series of videos, hands-on exercises, and a self-assessment. This course can be used either as a self-teaching tool or in a classroom setting. Teachers, you can download these materials to make hard copies of the exercises and quizzes, or integrate them into your own learning management system using our free Instructor Kit. Now, you can also access these same materials online through our Learning Center.
If you are already familiar with using CAD, but are new to Onshape, we recommend checking out our Essential Training video series.
The Learning Center is our first step into the world of interactive online courses for CAD and we would love to get your feedback. Please stay tuned as we learn, improve, and bring more CAD and engineering-related topics to you soon!
