Designing sheet metal parts in an old CAD system can be a tedious process of trial and error. Because many file-based CAD systems treat the flattened model as a feature that must be suppressed and unsuppressed, you are forced to constantly toggle between a folded and flattened feature to really understand your sheet metal part. Why is this a big deal? Let’s take a look.
Take an example like this sheet metal enclosure.
You can see in the screenshot above that we are creating a sheet metal part in an old CAD system. What you won’t see here is the flat pattern. That’s because in old CAD systems, you must first accept the feature, and then toggle the flatten feature before you can see what the flat pattern actually looks like.
So what happens if you don’t like the way the flat pattern looks?
You have to go back and edit the feature that created the folded model, then come back and toggle the flatten feature again to see if the changes you made will work. Also consider this: You can create several features before toggling the flattened feature and realizing you have a problem. In which case, you may have to recreate several features and not just one.
