The Onshape team at PTC has always enjoyed a strong relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS), and for good reason. From its inception, Onshape was built as a cloud-native solution, and AWS has provided the scalable, secure, and globally available infrastructure that makes this possible. Today, we’re excited to share an important new milestone in this partnership: Onshape is now officially available in the AWS Marketplace.
This announcement marks more than just another way to purchase Onshape. It signals a deepening of the relationship between PTC and AWS and underscores the growing importance of cloud-native tools in helping companies innovate faster, collaborate seamlessly, and maximize the value of their technology investments.
Why Onshape and AWS Are a Natural Fit
Onshape stands as the leading cloud-native product development platform, uniquely designed for modern engineering teams. It delivers professional-grade CAD and next-generation PDM through a web browser with no installs, no file servers, and no IT overhead.
Users of Onshape eliminate the frustrations of traditional installed, file-based CAD. No more manual updates, lost files, or downtime caused by crashes. Instead, teams co-design in real time within a single shared model, with built-in version control, branching, merging, and full release management.
By building on AWS, Onshape combines cloud-native agility with enterprise-grade security and scalability, ushering in a fundamentally new era for product design and engineering collaboration.
Building on a Strategic Collaboration
Last year, PTC and AWS entered into a Strategic Collaboration Agreement designed to accelerate cloud-native innovation. The agreement focused on three key areas: advancing Onshape product capabilities, expanding customer adoption programs, and supporting artificial intelligence initiatives.
This collaboration has already delivered meaningful results. PTC launched cloud-native CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) capabilities directly within Onshape, making it possible for teams to move seamlessly from design to manufacturing within the same cloud platform. We also introduced Onshape for Government, an offering that supports ITAR and EAR compliance, enabling defense and aerospace organizations to take advantage of cloud-native CAD while meeting stringent regulatory requirements.
And most recently, we unveiled Onshape AI Advisor, an intelligent assistant that helps design teams work faster and smarter by surfacing relevant design insights, automating routine tasks, and reducing costly design iterations. These advancements underscore how the PTC–AWS collaboration is fueling innovation in ways that directly benefit engineers, manufacturers, and product developers around the world.
Onshape in the AWS Marketplace
Today’s announcement represents the next step in this journey. By making Onshape available in the AWS Marketplace, PTC is expanding the ways customers can access and manage their design tools.
For companies already invested in AWS, the advantages are clear:
- Consolidated procurement and billing: Onshape subscriptions purchased through the AWS Marketplace appear directly in a company’s AWS bill. This simplifies vendor management, reduces administrative overhead, and creates a single point of visibility for cloud spending.
- Streamlined license management: IT and procurement teams can manage Onshape licenses alongside other AWS-based solutions, creating greater alignment between engineering tools and broader IT strategies.
- Maximizing AWS spend commitments: Many enterprises have annual AWS spending commitments as part of their enterprise agreements. Purchasing Onshape through the Marketplace allows those costs to count toward those commitments, ensuring that every dollar invested in product development also contributes to fulfilling existing agreements.
For forward-looking companies, this alignment represents a strategic advantage. Instead of treating CAD and PDM as standalone software costs, organizations can integrate them directly into their broader cloud strategy, consolidating both technology and financial investments into a single, coherent framework.
Why This Matters for Modern Product Development
The way products are designed and manufactured is changing rapidly. Global supply chains, distributed teams, and increasingly complex product lifecycles demand tools that are as flexible as they are powerful. Legacy file-based CAD systems, with their reliance on local installs and fragile IT infrastructures, and numerous file copies, simply weren’t built for this new reality.
Onshape, delivered on AWS, is different. By providing professional-grade CAD, PDM, simulation, and manufacturing tools in a single, cloud-native environment, Onshape empowers teams to:
- Collaborate without barriers: Designers, engineers, suppliers, and partners can all work in the same environment, in real time, no matter where they are in the world.
- Eliminate IT headaches: There are no downloads, installs, or manual upgrades, so engineering teams can focus on innovation instead of system maintenance.
- Protect against downtime and data loss: Automatic version control and continuous cloud backups mean designs are never lost and work is never interrupted.
- Innovate with agility: Branching and merging make it easy to explore new ideas without risk, while integrated PDM ensures that changes are always traceable and reversible.
By joining the AWS Marketplace, Onshape is now even easier to adopt for organizations that are already aligning their strategies around cloud technologies. It removes friction from procurement, helps maximize cloud investments, and makes it simpler than ever for companies to modernize their product development processes.
