When a client in the integrated security solutions industry asked which CAD system they should adopt for cloud migration, Sketch went above and beyond to provide the client with a fully thought-through CAD recommendation.
The Client’s Challenge
The client, a company in the integrated security solutions industry, had been working with Sketch for six months when they began exploring options for moving their CAD operations to the cloud.
The company was facing significant inefficiencies with their existing CAD system, primarily based in SOLIDWORKS. They were looking to move to a cloud-based CAD system and wanted input on the best approach. The process of accessing and managing CAD data in SOLIDWORKS was cumbersome, requiring multiple steps to transfer files via a remote desktop and Google Drive. This led to issues such as:
- Excessive time spent re-linking broken file connections
- Duplicated parts and assemblies
- Workflow disruptions due to file version conflicts
Recognising these inefficiencies, the Sketch team conducted a detailed review of their CAD setup to explore a more efficient alternative – Onshape by PTC.
Evaluating Onshape’s Potential
To determine whether Onshape could streamline operations, we performed an in-depth analysis comparing SOLIDWORKS and Onshape. Our review included:
- Assessing Data Migration: Examined the process of uploading SOLIDWORKS files to Onshape, noting the need for re-creating drawings and re-constraining assemblies.
- Workflow Optimization: Explored Onshape’s cloud-based infrastructure, which eliminates the need for remote desktop access and enables real-time collaboration.
- Testing Feature Parity: Analyzed Onshape’s tools for part modelling, assemblies, and drawings, comparing them to SOLIDWORKS.
- Collaboration and Version Control: Evaluated Onshape’s built-in Product Data Management (PDM) and branching/version control features.
What We Delivered to the Customer
After our evaluation, we provided our client with a detailed report outlining:
- The steps required to transition their CAD data to Onshape.
- A cost-benefit analysis of Onshape versus their existing SOLIDWORKS system
- A roadmap for setting up Onshape, including permissions, templates, workflows, and collaboration between electrical and mechanical teams
- Estimated time frames for different types of file conversions
