PTC’s LiveWorx is fast approaching! On May 15th-18th, 2023, in Boston, Massachusetts, thousands of attendees will come together to see technology come to life with innovative tech demos, and ample networking opportunities to create a memorable and inspirational experience to draw from for the next year.

In addition to the numerous Onshape training and certification opportunities we’ve talked about before, LiveWorx also features over 150 breakout sessions. Of those, almost 50 are CAD focused, and 16 are directly related to Onshape (our favorite CAD)!

We wanted to highlight a couple of these sessions. Take a look:

Three Words: Additive, Agile, & Robotics

Combining Additive & Agile Methods For Rapid Robotics Innovation
10:15 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. EDT, Wednesday, May 17
Session Code: CA1360C

session 1

If you attended Onshape Live ’23, the host of this session might seem familiar.

Matt Whelan, Engineering Director for Automated Storage Retrieval Systems at Ocado Technology, was featured in the keynote presentation, highlighting why his team chose Onshape.

Whelan will reveal Ocado's revolutionary additive-first method for developing robotics hardware during this LiveWorx session.

The Ocado team was able to develop the world's lightest and most effective shopping fulfillment bot thanks to a novel design process that prioritizes additive and is inspired by agile software development (one of our favorite topics!).

Mass Customization in Manufacturing, You Say?

Using Onshape Models for Robotic Assembly of Mass-Customizable Products
1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. EDT, Wednesday, May 17
Session Code: CA1057C

session 2

The growing consumer demand for choice and more sustainable practices is driving a key trend in manufacturing: Mass Customization.

Is it possible for a robotic assembly process to be programmed dynamically and assemble a customizable product?

CAE-Tech and The MTC wanted to find out. Their goal was to see if it’s possible to assemble a product – with potentially-infinite configurations – in a way that customer purchases can be put together without additional input from engineers.

Peter Harman, CTO of CAE-Tech, will go through the results from a use-case scenario where a robotic cell was prepared to perform an assembly task. To make it work, an extension to Onshape was developed that could generate the robot program based on parameter choices in an Onshape model.

In this presentation, learn about the process that followed, the goals achieved, and the potential disruptive impact of this technology on mass-customizable manufacturing.

Helping Engineers Work Smarter: What We Can Learn from Onshape Analytics
2:50 p.m. - 3:20 p.m. EDT, Wednesday, May 17
Session Code: CA1188B

session 3

Alison Olechowski, assistant professor at the University of Toronto, will show attendees how to best interpret data from Onshape Analytics and use it to empower your organization.

She’ll help answer questions about the way your team works best beyond the typical workplace personality quiz. Using Onshape Analytics, we can uncover CAD working styles and compatibility with colleagues – something that has never been done before because of the limits of traditional CAD software.

In this presentation, Olechowski will share results from a research study from our partners at Avidbots

Attendees will take a deep dive look at their CAD styles and project-level patterns on the team. Then, Olechowski will demonstrate how analytics can help you learn more about yourself as a designer or engineer, and about your team.

Celebrity Keynote Steven Johnson

Of course, the day wouldn't be complete without a keynote speaker you can brag about.

Steven Johnson, best-selling author and TED Interview podcast host, will keynote on Wednesday, May 17! His presentation "Where Good Ideas Come From" will explore how you can foster decision-making, scientific progress, and collaborative innovation in your organization. Johnson has written 13 best-selling books, and is the current host of PBS series How We Got to Now and Extra Life.

Two-Step at Xtropolis

End the day with some jams from award-winning country music star Dierks Bentley at the Mix @ 6, the “tech party of the year” on May 17.

The Mix @ 6 will kick off with a backyard BBQ on the Lawn on D with complimentary apps, refreshing libations, yard games, and a live DJ.

Other than these incredible break-out sessions and concert, come on by to the 200,000-square-foot exhibit hall – called “Xtropolis” – where you can experience hands-on demonstrations and talk to dozens of technology-leading companies.

Hope to see you in Boston this May!
