Chamfering is a simple yet powerful technique in CAD modeling that helps soften sharp edges, improve part fit, and enhance aesthetics. In Onshape, applying a chamfer is straightforward, but understanding the options can make a big difference. Start with the video below to learn the basics before delving into more detailed options:
Getting Started
To chamfer an edge or face:
- Select the Chamfer feature.
- Choose your target edge or face.
- Define the measurement type (see below) and chamfer type (equal distance, two distances, or distance and angle).
- Input the required dimension(s).
The chamfer type is intuitive. Either you want a symmetric (equal-distance) chamfer or an asymmetric chamfer, using either two distances or a distance and angle. For asymmetric chamfers, if the result is not what you expect, try pressing the flip button to reverse the values.
Measurement Types Explained
Chamfer Measurement options are not as intuitive. Offset measures the distance(s) from the starting edge:

Tangent measures distances from the tangent intersection:

Try both and choose the one that meets your requirements.
Chamfer Callouts in Drawings
To annotate chamfers on your Onshape drawings:
- Select the Chamfer Dimension tool.
- Select the chamfered edge and an adjacent edge from which to dimension.
- Move your cursor away and drop it in a suitable location.
To alter the style, navigate to the Properties panel > Dimensions tab > Chamfer section.
Bonus Tip: Chamfering Corners

Want to chamfer a corner vertex? A Corner Chamfer custom feature makes it easy. Select the 3 corresponding edges, define a uniform setback (or individual), and you are done.
