Model-Based Definition (MBD) in 3D CAD Software
Deliver precise, standards-based manufacturing data, right from your 3D model

What is MBD?
Model-Based Definition (MBD) is an approach where the 3D CAD model contains key product and manufacturing information (PMI)—such as dimensions, tolerances, materials, and annotations—alongside the geometry. This reduces ambiguity, improves accuracy, and streamlines communication across design, manufacturing, and inspection.
Onshape MBD brings this concept directly into the modeling environment by embedding semantic, machine-readable PMI into the 3D model itself. By making manufacturing-critical data part of the core CAD experience, Onshape MBD supports collaboration and enables downstream automation across inspection, manufacturing, and release workflows.
Key Features
Integrated 3D Annotations
Add geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T), weld symbols, and datums directly to your 3D models. Onshape’s standards-compliant annotation tools ensure your design intent is clearly communicated, without needing to rely solely on 2D drawings.

Smart Inspection Panel
The Inspection Panel presents a structured, filterable list of all Product Manufacturing Information (PMI) associated with your model. Instantly see dimensions, tolerances, and datums linked to specific geometry. Easily cross-highlight items in the list with their 3D counterparts for fast review and validation.

Shareable MBD Views
Communicate manufacturing intent more effectively with shareable URLs –always the case in Onshape– that preserve model display settings, section views, and MBD annotations. Onshape acts as both the viewer and the production tool, so you never need to export or access an add-on. Just open the PMI-rich model directly in your browser.

Feature List Awareness
MBD metadata is intelligently linked to your model’s feature list. Whether added through sketch dimensions, hole tolerances, or tagged datums, all annotations remain tied to the right geometry, enabling a clear, contextual understanding of your design’s specifications.

Downstream-Ready Data
Designed with real-world workflows in mind, Onshape MBD supports future export to STEP AP242 and seamless handoff to tools used for inspection and compliance, such as PC-DMIS or AS9102 documentation. It bridges the gap between design, quality, and manufacturing teams.
