TL;DR: This Tech Tip shows how to align one drawing view to another in Onshape using the “Align to” and “Rotate view” options, so all linked views stay perfectly aligned even when moved, highlighting how alignment chains make it easy to maintain a clean, professional drawing layout.
When you’re finishing up a detailed drawing, it’s often the small layout decisions that determine whether the final result looks clean and professional, or cluttered and confusing.
One common challenge shows up when certain components are difficult to identify or annotate in standard orthographic views. In these cases, section views are invaluable, but they can also introduce new layout problems if they take up too much space or disrupt the flow of the drawing.
Decoupling Views from their Parents
In cases like those in the example video, the first step toward a cleaner layout is removing the section view’s dependency on its parent view. By suppressing the alignment to the parent, the section view can be repositioned freely without affecting any other views on the sheet. This flexibility isn’t limited to section views. Projection views can be treated the same way if needed.
This single change opens the door to much more intentional drawing layouts, especially when working with complex assemblies or limited sheet space.
Rotating the View for Clarity
Once the section view is no longer tied to its parent, additional options become available, most notably, the ability to rotate the view. Rotating a view allows you to orient it in a way that better matches the geometry or improves readability.
By selecting a reference entity within the view, you can align the view vertically or horizontally relative to that geometry. It’s often worth trying both orientations to see which one integrates best with the rest of the drawing.
Aligning Views for a Polished Layout
After rotating and repositioning the section view, the final touch is aligning it with other views on the sheet. Using view-to-view alignment ensures consistent spacing and visual order. Once aligned, the views behave as a group: move one, and the others move with it, preserving alignment automatically.
This makes it easy to fine-tune the overall layout without constantly readjusting individual views.
Finishing the Drawing
With the section view properly oriented and aligned, adding the remaining balloons becomes a simple final step. The result is a drawing that communicates clearly without feeling crowded or disorganized.
Thoughtful use of view orientation and alignment tools can make a significant difference in the quality of your drawings. By taking a few extra moments to adjust these settings, you can ensure your drawings not only convey the right information but also look clean, balanced, and professional.
