The CAD admin is an important position for any company since they provide licenses, manage users, define company settings, ensure proper sharing permissions, and more.

With Onshape, much of the hassle that comes with file-based CAD goes away, as admins no longer need to worry about installation issues or users being unable to connect to the company’s PDM server. Additionally, adding new admins to the company is easier than ever.

Onshape Professional: Adding an Admin

In Onshape Professional, when you add users to your company, you can assign them as members or admins just by entering their email address.

After this step, they’ll receive an Onshape sign-up or login email (depending on whether they already have an account), and they can be off and running.

If you need to change an existing member to an admin, you can easily toggle their permissions in user settings.

Onshape Enterprise: Adding an Admin

Onshape Enterprise has a slightly different process for setting up admins, and for good reason: It grants them additional controls over user permissions.

First, assign your new user a full license. This is a necessary first step, as they need to be in your enterprise to make them an admin.

Once they’ve logged in, under Global permissions, you can grant them admin permissions. As you’d expect, this gives them complete insight into your company’s data structure and the ability to grant more granular permissions to other users within Global permissions.

Notes and Best Practices for CAD Admins

  • Depending on company size, you may want multiple admins. The most common setup is to have two admins for redundancy, flexibility, and continuity if someone changes positions or goes to a new company.
  • Not all users should be admins, as that defeats the purpose of admin privileges. Have a select few members of your team be admins who control sharing permissions for the rest of the company.
  • Company owners are automatically admins by default.
